Lactic Acid Bacteria Soil Drench: The Cheapest Microbial Inoculant You Can Make at Home
E. WhitfieldMost farmers spend real money on microbial inoculants. Bags of mycorrhizal powder, bottled compost teas, freeze-dried bacterial blends. Some of that is worthwhile. But lactic acid bacteria (LAB) soil drench costs almost nothing to make, takes about ten days, and delivers a dense population of beneficial microbes directly to your root zone.

This is one of the oldest tricks in Korean Natural Farming, and it works.
What Lactic Acid Bacteria Actually Do in Soil
Lactobacillus species dominate healthy fermentation environments: yogurt, kimchi, silage, sauerkraut. In soil, they do several useful things simultaneously. They suppress pathogenic fungi and bacteria through the production of lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide. They break down organic matter into plant-available forms. They produce B vitamins and enzymes that stimulate root growth.
Perhaps most importantly, they prepare the soil for a broader microbial succession. Think of them as pioneer species: they move in fast, lower the pH slightly, create conditions that favor beneficial organisms, and then yield to a more complex community over time.
You want that succession happening in your beds.
The Two-Stage Brewing Process
Making a LAB solution requires two distinct steps. Do not skip either one.
Stage 1: Capture the bacteria from rice wash
Rinse one cup of raw, unpolished rice in two cups of unchlorinated water. Swirl it hard for thirty seconds. Strain the rice out and keep the cloudy liquid. Pour it into a jar, cover loosely with cloth or a paper towel (the culture needs to breathe), and leave it at room temperature for three to five days.
You will see bubbles form. A thin layer of starch may settle at the bottom, and a yellowish liquid will separate on top. That liquid carries a concentrated Lactobacillus culture harvested directly from the environment around your farm. This matters: you are selecting organisms that are already adapted to your local conditions.
Stage 2: Multiply the bacteria in raw milk
Once you have your rice wash culture, strain off the liquid and add it to ten parts raw, full-fat milk (not pasteurized; pasteurization kills the competing microbes that help the Lactobacillus outcompete pathogens). Use a ratio of one part rice wash liquid to ten parts milk.
Leave this mixture loosely covered at room temperature for another five to seven days. The milk will separate into curds and a yellowish liquid. That liquid is your LAB serum. Strain off the curds (which make excellent compost fodder), and you have a concentrated, shelf-stable microbial inoculant.
Stored in the refrigerator in a sealed jar, it keeps for several months.

How to Apply It
Dilute one part LAB serum to 500 parts water. That sounds like a lot, but the bacterial concentration in the serum is extremely high: one milliliter can contain several billion colony-forming units. A 500:1 dilution still delivers a serious microbial load to your soil.
Apply as a drench to bare soil, around transplants, or to compost piles to accelerate breakdown. Once every two weeks during the growing season is a reasonable starting cadence. If your soil has been through a rough patch (herbicide drift, fumigation, heavy tillage), apply weekly for a month to kick-start the recovery.
You can also add it to compost teas as a fermentation booster, or combine it with fermented plant extracts for a more complete foliar feed.
A Few Things Worth Knowing
Do not use chlorinated tap water at any stage. Chlorine kills Lactobacillus efficiently. Run your tap water through a carbon filter, or simply leave it in an open bucket overnight before use.
Raw milk matters. If you can only get pasteurized, the process will still work to some degree, but you lose the competitive microbial ecology that makes a truly robust culture. Seek out a local dairy farm willing to sell raw milk for agricultural use; this is legal in most jurisdictions when sold directly.
Smell is your quality indicator. Finished LAB serum should smell clean and slightly sour, like good yogurt or buttermilk. If it smells putrid or sulfurous, something went wrong: discard it and start over with cleaner equipment.
This is not magic. LAB drench works best as part of a broader soil biology program: compost, diverse cover crops, reduced tillage. Applied to biologically depleted, compacted, or heavily chemically treated soil, it will have modest effects on its own. Applied to soil that already has some life in it, it accelerates what is already working.
Ten days of fermentation and less than a dollar of inputs. That is a reasonable bet on your soil.
