Green Manures: The Crops You Grow Just to Bury (And Why Your Soil Will Thank You)

Most crops go in the ground to come back out. Green manures work the opposite way. You grow them, then you turn them under while they're still young and succulent, returning that biomass directly to the soil as a fast-decomposing source of organic matter and nutrients. Simple concept. Surprisingly underused.

If you've read anything on this site about cover crops, you know the basics: living roots feed soil biology, bare ground is the enemy, and something growing is almost always better than nothing. Green manures take that logic one step further by treating the crop itself as the input.

What Makes a Good Green Manure

Not every plant qualifies. The best green manures share a few traits: fast growth, high nitrogen content (or nitrogen-fixing ability), tender tissue that breaks down quickly, and enough biomass to actually matter. Legumes dominate this category for good reason.

Fava beans, hairy vetch, crimson clover, field peas, and sunn hemp are all workhorses. Each one fixes atmospheric nitrogen through root-associated bacteria, meaning the fertility they deliver cost you nothing but seed and time. Sunn hemp is worth special mention: under warm conditions it can produce six to ten feet of growth in forty-five to sixty days, fixing over a hundred pounds of nitrogen per acre before you turn it under.

Brassicas like mustard and daikon radish serve a different function. Their root action breaks up compaction, and their glucosinolate compounds (released during decomposition) suppress certain soil-borne pathogens and weed seeds. Buckwheat grows fast, smothers weeds aggressively, and scavenges phosphorus from otherwise unavailable forms, releasing it back to subsequent crops as it decomposes.

Each species has a job. Which one you choose depends on what your soil actually needs.

Timing Is Everything

Here's where most growers leave results on the table. The nutrient content of a green manure drops fast once the plant begins to flower and set seed. Nitrogen moves out of the leaves and into the seed. Tissue toughens and lignifies. Decomposition slows.

Turn the crop under at or just before flowering. That's the window. At that stage, the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio is low enough that microbes can break down the material quickly, releasing nutrients into the root zone within two to four weeks. Wait until seed set and you're essentially burying a pile of straw: slow to break down, temporarily locking up nitrogen in the process.

For incorporation timing with your cash crops, plan a minimum two-week buffer between turning under the green manure and transplanting or seeding. Some growers prefer three to four weeks. The decomposition process consumes oxygen and releases compounds that can inhibit germination if you plant too soon.

Managing the Carbon-to-Nitrogen Balance

Green manures rarely work in isolation. If your soil organic matter is low, mixing a high-nitrogen legume with a carbon-rich species like oats or rye gives you a broader effect. The legume feeds the microbes with nitrogen; the cereal provides structure and slows the flush down so nutrients don't volatilize before roots can capture them.

This is exactly the logic behind multi-species cover crop mixes, applied here with the explicit intention of burial. Some farms run a three-way combination: a nitrogen fixer, a brassica for pathogen suppression, and a cereal for carbon balance. All three go in together, all three get turned under together.

No-Till Adaptations

Turning crops under with tillage gives you the fastest nutrient release, but it doesn't suit every system. On no-till or reduced-till ground, green manures can be terminated with a roller-crimper: a drum fitted with blunt metal chevrons that crimps and mats the plant down without inverting soil. Terminated this way, the green manure becomes a mulch layer, suppressing weeds and decomposing more slowly from the surface down.

Roller-crimping works best when plants are at full flower or slightly past. Terminate too early and regrowth happens; too late and decomposition stalls. The principles are the same, the application different.

The Honest Case for Growing to Bury

There's a mental adjustment required here. You're spending seed money, water, and time on a crop you'll never sell. For farmers trained to measure every input against a direct return, that's a hard habit to break.

But the return is real. It shows up in the cash crop that follows: better germination, deeper roots, reduced fertilizer requirements, improved water retention. Fields that receive regular green manure rotations build organic matter steadily over years, and organic matter is the asset that keeps compounding.

Grow the crop. Bury it young. Give your soil two weeks. Then watch what comes next.
